Figurative Work: 1980s - 2000s

T Guitar
Pastel, 9 ¼ x 8 ¼ in.
2010

Thad was one of David’s oldest and dearest friends, a musician who brought his guitar to play for David at the Zen Hospice. They had many gardening adventures together, first as neighbors in the Haight, and continuing when Thad moved to a house further in the city.

Prelim 1
Charcoal, 16 x 12 ¾ in.
2005

Untitled (1990 Drawing)
Charcoal and ink on Japanese paper, 25 x 38 in.

A self portrait imagining himself dying and floating over that mat.
He lived for another 22 years but he really did look like this at the end.

Big Orange
Oil on canvas, 87 x 72 in.
1994

This wonderful work needs a good home! I see it in a restaurant/coffee shop, or on a lovely large wall in a home. One of the few where David painted himself (middle, with lilies) – the others are James, his roommate, and another James, who lived upstairs.

Will
Pastel, 23 ½ x 18 in.
1985

Perhaps David’s truest, dearest and oldest friend. They met at Indiana U of P, and drove across country to San Francisco. Will lived upstairs in David’s apartment on Haight Street for many years, to this day.

Pastel Behind Green Room
Pastel, 6 7/8 x 12 in.

September 1985 Pastel Nudes
Pastel on newsprint paper, 18 x 24 in.

James
Pastel, 19 ¾ x 25 ½ in.
1982

David’s longtime roommate, when he wasn’t off working in Antarctica! Also a splendid artist in his own right.

Taj
Oil on linen, 30 x 41 ¼ in.
1980

A colorful character David met in Boston before he moved to San Francisco.
Might have been a therapist…or psychic. He claimed both.
